I'm concerned about these sculpts...

I bought it simply because the Lucius pattern escape pod was cute.
I mean, look at it, it's like a little drop pod!

I suddenly want fifty of these.  This is the best civilian object GW have produced in a while, and it's mine now.  Mine.

But that's not really what I wanted to post about.  I wanted to voice my bigoted opinion over this sculpt; there's something... wrong, with it, I can't really place it.

Has anyone else noticed?  Never mind the fact of it's origin-- China, oddly-- it feels, sort of thick and round.  I know the difference between their building casts and their figure casts, and this feels like a building cast.  Do you understand?  Like there isn't as much detail as there could have been.

Like when a new director takes over an existing series, it's so strange, so different and strange!  I don't know if I like it or not...

On the one hand, it's all thick and yucky to the touch, but on the other hand it's weirdly nostalgic, like 90's fisher price... To be sure, it feels like a set of bricks, very nice and solid, but oddly devoid of detail...
THRONE I'm on the fence.  What do you think?  Do you like the objectives kit?  Of course you do, I'm just a snobbish toff!

Bye bye for now.

  1. They do seem to be a step down in 'resolution', I noticed the same thing when I built a set. They paint up quick and look rather nice in the end! I'm definitely liking the direction they've been going including little flavor models like these and the servo-hauler kit. Definitely makes the battlefields come alive!

    1. Hee hee, good to know I didn't waste too much money! I don't deny the concept is great, and if they paint up alright I can't exactly argue.

  2. I know the feeling. The bases are the same. Cheap, oily looking plastic, and there is no way the painted versions on the box art are the same as whats in the box, the contents are like you say rounded and lower resolution.

    1. Yeah, the texture is a big thing too. I wonder if future kits will need the rigorous cleaning FW requires?

    2. I don't know. I bought the (very expensive) Plasma Obliterator which unfortunately was made from this same plastic. My standard Revell plastic cement doesn't do a very good job of sticking this stuff together.

GW should really declare which of their plastics a given kit is made from, because these kits are inferior to their other offerings.

  3. It feels somewhere in-between the regular and terrain sets to me. The definition on the detail could be better, but the designs are good enough that I don't regret my purchase at all, and will probably be buying more sets for bits to use in other projects. The Drop Pod is far and away the best thing in and of itself, but I can also see tons of uses for bits from the comms array, stasis chamber, and medicae station in other projects, particularly for Mechanicus, Chaos, or Stealer Cult stuff.

    1. Oh yes, that's the other reason I got the kit; the loverly bitz! In spite of my misgivings I'll probably end up buying one of these every week.

  4. I haven't picked up a set yet, but I can imagine what you are talking about. On the business side, terrain type kits don't sell well so I can understand they want to cut costs on these. But as a hobbyist, it is frustrating with the cheaper plastic. But if this is the cost of having GW continue to produce bot-as-profitiable kits, I can be ok with it as they still look cool on the whole.

    1. Ah, sales figures on terrain, I didn't think of that. Good point. Shame though that this kit has so much potential, but it suffers from the effects of unpopular terrain.
